FSGS: Life Expectancy of Someone on Dialysis or Kidney Transplant

FSGS: Life Expectancy of Someone on Dialysis or Kidney TransplantBasically, the kidneys are made up of millions of cells called glomeruli, which filter the blood and expel toxins out of the body. What FSGS does is causing scarring of the glomeruli which results in the cells to stop filtering the blood and cause the build up of toxins and fluid. As the glomeruli continue to scar, the kidney function continues to decrease to 15% or less, the point of having to either go on Dialysis or have a kidney transplant.

FSGS: life expectancy on dialysis

There is no limit to how long a person can live on dialysis. On average, the life span is between 5 and 6 years, but this varies from case to case.

According to statistics, survival rates are as below: 1 year - 80%; 2 years - 64%; 5 years - 33%; 10 years - 10%. Another important fact is that 20% of dialysis die in the first year, 50% die in the first 3 months.

FSGS: life expectancy on kidney transplant

Unfortunately, recurrence of this disease in the transplanted kidney varies from 20-50%. The return may happen very soon after the surgery or within hours to days. Mostly, this occurs is within the first year after Kidney Transplant.

If the disease comes back, more than 50% of patients will lose their kidneys in 5 years. Of all transplanted patients with FSGS, approximately 15% will lose the kidney because of recurrent FSGS.

You may feel scary after seeing the above facts about life expectancy. But, do not feel depressed, there is alternative therapy to help FSGS patient live a long and happy life without dialysis or transplantation.
