FSGS and Low Hemoglobin (HGB)

Hemoglobin is one specific protein in red blood cells that is responsible for transporting oxygen for cells all over the body. FSGS is one glomerular disorder that can affect the body’s ability to produce red blood cells as well as hemoglobin, resulting in low hemoglobin (HGB) and renal anemia easily.

Low hemoglobin level is usually caused by the decreased hemoglobin production or the increase of hemoglobin loss. Generally, several conditions caused by FSGS kidney disease can lead to low hemoglobin level.

1. Lack of erythropoietin (EPO): In addition to cleansing the blood, producing EPO is also one important kidney function. However, with the decline of kidney function, scarred kidneys are unable to produce enough EPO, resulting in lack of red blood cells and hemoglobin.
