How To Diagnose FSGS

How To Diagnose FSGSFSGS often causes patient to have nephrotic syndrome, which is a severe condition of kidney disease, and often leads to kidney failure. Thereby, the earlier FSGS is diagnosed, the better patient’s prognosis will be.

FSGS often appears in young people, which causes lesion in kidney, and because the major presentation of FSGS patient is nephrotic syndrome, so it is hard to diagnose FSGS by lad tests or other common examination measures.

Thereby, to diagnose FSGS, renal biopsy is needed.

But in fact, renal biopsy may also not be very exactly, because FSGS causes damage in kidney partially, so it is normal that the tissue being taken can not reflect patient’s disease exactly. But if the tissues being taken have symptoms like glomeruli have different sizes, kidney tubules shrink, the lesion degrees of kidney tubule and glomerulus have inconformity, etc, it is necessary to take second renal biopsy.

FSGS is often mixed with minimal change disease, so to diagnose FSGS, it is necessary to differentiate FSGS from minimal change disease, which also often cause nephrotic syndrome. But there are some differences in their clinical symptoms. For example, FSGS patient’s glomeruli have different sizes, but that will present as the increase in volume in patient with minimal change disease. FSGS’s lesion in glomeruli is partially, but minimal change disease’s lesion is diffuse.

Besides, if patient has some symptoms, it is also necessary to suspect that patient has FSGS.

·Patient has high blood pressure and kidney damage when he began to get this disease, or that can appear in the early stage of kidney disease.

·Patients with FSGS have high rate of getting microscopic hematuria.

·Most FSGS patient’s proteinuria is nonselective, but minimal change disease patient’s proteinuria is more likely to be selective.

·FSGS has bad reaction to hormone therapy, but in most cases, mineral change disease has sensitive reaction to hormone therapy.
