How Does Nephrotic Syndrome Lead To Pleural Effusion

How Does Nephrotic Syndrome Lead To Pleural Effusion Patient with nephrotic syndrome can have obvious symptoms, among which edema is very common, and for patient with very severe condition, he may even have pleural effusion. How does nephrotic syndrome lead to pleural effusion?

Why does patent with nephrotic syndrome have pleural effusion?

Nephrotic syndrome is a syndrome that can be caused by many kidney diseases, and patient with nephrotic syndrome can have severe edema, which is mainly caused by large protein loss.

Protein has the function of keeping water in blood. As we know, there are lots of protein in blood, which are important for our body health. On the other hand, when patient has much protein loss, his osmotic pressure of blood will decrease, which can lead to the fluid in patient’s blood vessel flowing into tissue space, and then patient will have edema. If there are too much protein losing from patient’s blood vessel, he will have more severe edema, and that is why patient can have pleural effusion.

Why does patient have proteinuria?

A major characteristic of nephrotic syndrome is the increase of glomerular filtration membrane’s permeability, and that is also the cause of proteinuria.

Kidney’s filtration function is mainly completed by nephron, and nephron consists of glomerulus and kidney tubule. Glomerulus has filtration membrane, which can keep the useful substances in blood, and let out the wastes. When the filtration membrane is damaged, its permeability will be changed, and the useful substances in blood will also be filtered out, and protein is among them, so patient will have proteinuria. For patients with nephrotic syndrome, they often have severe proteinuria.

Thereby, to treat patient’s pleural effusion, treatment should not only aims at reliving this complication, but also should repairing patient’s kidney function.
