Is it bad for patient with kidney disease to have blood ures nitrogen (BUN) 43mg/dL? Patient with this situation may have this doubt. However, this also depends on patient’s condition.
What’s the normal BUN range?
BUN is a major end metabolic product of protein. Protein can produce many substances, and some substances will be transported into liver and produce BUN. While BUN will be filtered out by kidney. Just like creatinine, our body’s BUN also has its normal range, and that is 9~20mg/dL.
Is bad for patient to have BUN 43?
As we know, the level of 43mg/dL is much more than the normal BUN range, and it will be dangerous if that is caused by patient’s kidney damage. but that does not always mean patient has a bad condition.
Except for kidney damage, many other reasons can also cause patient to have a high BUN level. For example, if patient has not restricted his diet, and when he take much protein, his BUN level will have obvious rise. Besides, if patient loses too much water, or if patient has kidney stone in both kidneys, his BUN will also rise. While in these conditions, patient’s high BUN do not mean a serious condition, and that can recover if patient takes right measures to deal with.
On the other hand, if patient’s high BUN is caused by kidney damage, it will be a bad sign.
Just like creatinine, our BUN level can stay in its stable range even though patient has kidney failure, and BUN level will not rise until more than half kidney function is damaged. Besides, the severity of patient’s kidney damage is in direct proportion to his BUN level. Thereby, if patient find his BUN level is 43mg/dL, it indicates patient has severe kidney failure.
