Can FSGS Cause Dry Skin and Itching

Can FSGS Cause Dry Skin and ItchingDry skin and skin itching are uncommon in the early stage of FSGS. However, with the progression of FSGS, these two problems may appear. Are dry skin and itching associated with FSGS kidney disease?

Itching and FSGS

Most often, these skin problems appear at end stage kidney disease. Some FSGS patients with Stage 5 CKD feel itchy all the time, while some others feel it comes and goes. The leading cause of skin itching is high phosphorus level in the body.

At stage 5, kidneys are functioning with severe damage. Impaired kidneys are unable to eliminate extra phosphorus from the body. The buildup of phosphorus in the blood can cause itchy skin easily.

If patients have begun dialysis, either peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis, they may experience annoying itching at the beginning of dialysis. Then, patients are at a risk of allergies, which are also one cause of skin itching.

Dry skin and FSGS

Dry skin also appears commonly in end stage FSGS. Kidney failure can cause abnormal changes in the sweat glands and oil glands that leads the skin to be dry easily. Dry skin can increase the risk of infections and the wounds in the skin are healed slowly than they should. Additionally, dry skin is also one cause of itching.

In conclusion, skin itching is often associated with high phosphorus level or allergic reactions, while dry skin is due to changes in sweat glands and oil glands. In fact, the root cause is severe decline of kidney function level.

According to the causes, patients should take corresponding managements to alleviate their skin itching or dry skin. If they want to get rid of these problems, treatments that can help improve their kidney function should also be sought. Please, don’t worry. Many kidney experts are always here to help you.
