Upper Respiratory Infection and IgA Nephropathy

Upper Respiratory Infection is risk factor to lead to IgA Nephropathy and its relapse. Prevention and management on upper respiratory infection is very important for people living with IgA Nephropathy.

Respiratory infection and IgA Nephropathy

IgA Nephropathy occurs when IgA immune complex settles in kidneys. Over time, it will lead to inflammatory responses and causes a series of renal damages. Meantime, IgA Nephropathy is an immune defect kidney disease. Once upper respiratory infection attacks human body, it will stimulate the abnormal immune system of IgA Nephropathy. Thus it will speed up inflammatory responses and aggravate the renal conditions. Upper Respiratory Infection is just like a “blasting fuse”, which can wake up “latent risk” of IgA to flare up.

Prevention and Management for upper respiratory infection

Viruses are germs that cause infections. The infection is spread if viruses are passed to others by sneezing, coughing, or personal contact. You may also become infected by handling objects that were touched by someone with an URI.

Eat healthy foods, especially fruits with vitamin C, such as oranges.

You can take the following advices to prevent URI.

Washing your hands after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

Ensure enough rest.

Turn away from others and use tissues when you cough or sneeze.

Wash your hands before touching food, dishes, glasses, silverware or napkins or computer keyboards.

Use paper cups and paper towels in bathrooms.

Treatment for IgA Nephropathy is as important as the prevention. Upper Respiratory Infection can increase the risk of IgA Nephropathy while the root cause--immune disorder results in the kidney disease. In this view, you are suggested to try Immunotherapy.
