Infections Caused by Polycystic Kidney DiseaseApproximately 30% to 50% of patients with PKD (polycystic kidney disease) have infection at some point. Cyst infection and urinary tract infection are the two most common types.

1. Cyst infection

►Cause: Once it ruptures, infection will appear. In addition, an infected cyst can be the result of hematogenous bacterial seeding, after surgery, or contamination after previous puncture.

►Symptom

* Chill

* Fever (temperature>38.5 ℃ for 3 days)

* Abdominal pain

* Blood in urine

►Treatment

* Antibiotics: Antibiotic treatment is widely used. It takes 8 weeks or even longer to treat kidney cyst infection. Its efficiency is defined when the symptoms relieve. However, not all cases have good response to antibiotic treatment. If it cannot control the cyst infection, other aggressive treatments will be needed.

* Nephrectomy: if after trying the above treatments, you still cannot improve kidney cyst infection, nephrectomy may be needed to remove the infected kidney.

Healthy diet: Foods, which is of rich vitamin C, like berries, are pretty good for preventing kidney infections.

2. Urinary tract infection

►Cause: Anyone can get a urinary tract infection, but this infection is a particular problem for people with PKD. This is because the cysts in the kidneys interfere with the normal flow of urine, and even minor delays in the flow increase your chance of an infection. Moreover, a ruptured renal cyst can make bacteria enter into the ureter, resulting in infection. Kidney stone, one of the complications of PKD, may also cause infection, when it passes through the ureter.

►Symptom

* Pain and tenderness in the upper back and sides

* Burning sensation or pain during urination

* Strong unpleasant smell of urine

* Kidney infection: fever, chill, lower back pain

* Cloudy or foamy urine

►Treatment

* Antibiotics or surgery

* Drinking plenty of water will help to rush bacteria in urinary tract away

* Avoid coffee, alcohol, and spicy foods, all of which irritate the bladder.

* Vitamin C-rich foods including oranges, cabbage, tomatoes, red berries, kiwi, broccoli, spinach, guava and grapefruit are all good choices.

Either cyst infection or urinary tract infection is one of PKD complications. Therefore, to treat the infection effectively, controlling or removing the cyst should be the root solution. Chinese herb is a natural remedy, which has less side effects compared with western medicine. If you have infection with PKD, you should pay attention on the treatment, because if left untreated, it may lead to kidney failure.
