Is Medullary Sponge Kidney the Same Thing As PKDMedullary sponge kidney (MSK) is a birth defect of the tubules—tiny tubes inside the kidneys. It is not the same thing as PKD (polycystic kidney disease). To make you more clear, I will list some differences between MSK and PKD.

Definition

- Medullary sponge kidney

Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK) is an inborn kidney disorder that is typically characterized by formation of cysts in the medulla, the inner part of the kidneys, creating a sponge-like appearance. It is not inherited.

-Polycystic kidney disease

Polycystic kidney disease is cystic genetic disorder of the kidneys. It is characterized by a cluster of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys. The cysts are fluid-filled and always enlarge the kidneys.

Symptoms

- Medullary sponge kidney

Actually, as medullary sponge kidney develops slowly, there is no obvious symptoms in the early stage. This is also the reason why this kind of kidney disease is hard to be diagnosed. The common symptoms are kidney stone and repeated urinary tract infection, and sometimes patients may experience back pain and painless blood urine.

- Polycystic kidney disease

The most obvious symptom is pain in the back, flank or kidney area. Some people may have hematuria if the cysts rupture.

Prognosis

- Medullary sponge kidney

Morbidity is 1/5000 and it usually causes no kidney damages. Most people get this kidney disease at the age of 40-50 years old. No treatment is needed if there is not any symptom or complication occurs. However, once kidney stone or urinary tract infection is caused, you should take timely and effective treatment.

- Polycystic kidney disease

The prognosis of polycystic kidney disease is not so good as Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease. PKD is more common and severer, and it nearly affects 12 million people worldwide. Generally speaking, about 50% of patients who have Polycystic Kidney Disease have renal failure by age 57-73. Some factors including gender, age, the time of patients’ disease onset and the time of first occurrence of hematuria and high blood pressure will also influence the prognosis. If uncontrolled effectively, it will be life-threatening.
