How to Relieve Shoulder Pain While on Peritoneal DialysisSome of the patients during or after peritoneal dialysis suffer from shoulder pain. Whether is it a complication of peritoneal dialysis or caused by other reasons? Are there any effective ways to relieve shoulder pain?

Why does shoulder pain occur while on peritoneal dialysis?

1. Renal osteopathy

The pain usually happens on the left shoulder. Due to calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D metabolic disorders, secondary hyperparathyroidism and acid-base imbalance, patients get renal osteopathy. Bone pain is one of the symptoms. When they are on peritoneal dialysis, their damaged kidneys cannot eliminate the deposition of phosphorus, thus shoulder pain appears.

2. Pneumoperitoneum

Shoulder pain may also be related to pneumoperitoneum, malpositioned peritoneal dialysis catheter, or bowel perforation. If air bubbles get into the peritoneum along with the dialyzate, pains on the back, neck and shoulder will come up. What’s more, the bilateral shoulder pains may be due to subdiaphragmatic irritation with dialyzate.

3. Improper dialyzate temperature

Low dialyzate temperature induces peritoneal blood vessels contraction, causing muscle cramps. Then, shoulder pain is caused.

4. Other factors

The drain tube, the PH value and osmotic pressure of dialyzate, and the speed of drug injections can all stimulate abdominal nerves, thus leading to shoulder pain.

How to relieve shoulder pain?

Having known the reasons that cause shoulder pain, it will be easier for you to understand the following solutions.

- Keep enough supply of calcium and lower phosphorus intake.

- Keep the dialyzate temperature between 35℃ and 37℃.

- Reducing the osmotic pressure of dialyzate and the speed of the liquid injecting.

The above ways just relieve shoulder pain temporarily. Repairing the damaged renal tissues is the key to solve this problem. Immunotherapy, Chinese Medicine Bath and Acupuncture are all safe and effective. Leave a message below or contact with our online experts to get the detailed information.

Our Treatment effect

Proteinuria is a common symptom of kidney disease

Mouse over the picture, it can be magnified.

It can make your urine foamy. Although it does not make you feel uncomfortable, it can impair your renal function and make your kidney disease worse. Conventional treatment such as steroids and immunosuppressants can hardly make it negative. In our hospital, systemic Chinese medicine treatment can help you turn it negative. Look at this picture, bubbles in urine become less and less with our treatment going on.
