Antibiotics and Nephrotic Syndrome
Multitudes of disorders can affect renal function. One such sign of condition is Nephrotic Syndrome. This symptoms includes excess proteinuria, swelling, low blood protein, and high cholesterol. Here, we would like to talk about antibiotics and Nephrotic Syndrome.
Due to altered immune system in Nephrotic Syndrome, patients are susceptible to infections. The infection may accelerate the progression of kidney disease if it is not well treated.
Antibiotics may be prescribed to control infections but can cause many adverse effects including deterioration of kidney damage. Medicines patients take are filtered out of the body by the kidneys and excreted in the urine.
In NS, the diseased kidneys fail to function properly. So it is important to discuss with the physician about options to prevent side effects from the medication and options to prevent kidney damage from it.
In addition, there are steps that you can take at home to prevent further kidney damage from antibiotics. They include:
1. Drink cranberry juice each day while taking the medicine, as it helps to flush out kidneys and prevent bacteria from growing in the urinary tract which can increase the risk for impairment of the kidneys.
2. Cut back substances that are hard on the kidneys such as salt, caffeine drinks and alcohol.
3. Have a good monitor of blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
4. Do not take acetaminophen (including tylenol) and pain killer.
5. Quit smoking. Exercising for 30 minutes at least 3 times per week. In addition, eat healthy foods including fresh fruits and vegetables.
