Prognosis of Nephrotic Syndrome

2014-04-03 08:47

Prognosis of Nephrotic SyndromeThe prognosis is closely related to underling cause of the Nephrotic Syndrome, the person's age, and degree of kidney damage.

Symptoms may disappear completely if the Nephrotic Syndrome is caused by a treatable disorder, such as an infection, cancer, or drugs. In this case, the prognosis is good. While Nephrotic Syndrome caused by other kidney diseases has various prognosis. Prognosis of Nephrotic Syndrome caused by several common diseases is as below:

Minimal change disease

Minimal change disease often occurs to children and is a mild kidney lesion, which only can be observed by electron microscope. It usually has a good prognosis in children, because the disease responds very well to steroids and does not cause chronic renal failure. Any relapses that occur become less frequent in children over time while in 30 to 50% of adults, disease relapses.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

This disease damages glomeruli. It affects mainly adolescents but also young and middle-aged adults.

There is no effective treatment for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, so the prognosis is poor. In most adults and children, the disease progresses to end-stage kidney failure 5 to 20 years after diagnosis. Factors associated with a poor prognosis in these cases include level of proteinuria, blood pressure control and kidney function (GFR).

Membranous nephropathy

The incidence of membranous nephropathy in adults is higher than that in children. About 25% develop into end-stage kidney failure.

Though the prognosis is varied, patients could improve their prognosis by the following methods:

Healthy lifestyle

Keeping healthy lifestyle can build a solid foundation to their treatment. Stick to a low-salt diet is beneficial to relieve the symptoms of edema and high blood pressure. Do some mild exercise, such as jogging, yoga, swimming, etc. The exercise could help stimulate blood circulation to discharge metabolic waste and enhance their immunity.

Avoid infections and flu

Patients should be cautious of infections and flu. These diseases can aggravate or cause relapse of Nephrotic Syndrome.
