Creatine Kinase Counting Is Very High in Lupus
I was diagnosed with SLE (lupus) when I was 24 years old. Now, my creatine kinase (CK) counting is very high. At the moment, it is 2300. I also has Raynaud's phenomenon. Then, I am so weak that I can hardly walk. I would be grateful if you could give me some advise.
Do you have a similar experience? SLE refers to systemic lupus erythematosus that can attack the whole body including skin, heart, kidneys, blood vessels, joint, muscle, and so on. With the progression of Lupus, patients will suffer from more and more severe symptoms and complications including muscle weakness and pain.
A creatine kinase (CK) may be ordered alone or along with other blood tests like serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. The CK counting is usually used to detect muscle inflammation, muscle damage or heart damage. If it is higher than normal, high CK counting can reflect several disorders.
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Multiple myositis, progressive muscular dystrophy or severe muscle injury
- Cerebrovascular accident, meningitis, tetanus, systemic convulsions, shock, etc
- Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
For lupus patients, high CK counting means muscle damage which is caused by the attack of immune complexes.
Raynaud's phenomenon is characterized by cold fingers, pale skin, stiffness, red or even violaceous fingers, and so on. This disease is quite common in systemic lupus erythematosus, because it can damage vascular epithelial cells resulting in vasculitis.
Both of these two disorders can indicate Lupus has attacked patients' muscle or even heart. This is why the patient feels so weak that she can hardly walk. If she wants to get rid of these problems, the only way is to make her Lupus under control.
Please, don't worry. It is still possible to lower patient's high CK counting, alleviate muscle problem and control Lupus, but the treatment should depend on patients' medical condition. Welcome to tell us more about your case, so we can send you some suggestions in 24 hours.
