Kidney shrinkage, or kidney atrophy, refers to that kidneys are shrunk abnormally in size. For healthy adults, their kidneys are 10-12 cm in length, 5-6 cm in width and 3-4 cm in thickness. Atrophic kidney is one abnormal phenomenon in which kidneys are relatively or obviously smaller than the normal value.
Bilateral kidney shrinkage in very serious and pregnancy will cause further kidney damage, since pregnancy burden the kidneys. If you just have a little proteinuria and have no high blood pressure, pregnancy wont aggravate kidney damage.
Effects of bilateral kidney shrinkage on pregnancy
Since the severity of patient’s illness condition is different, the effects on pregnancy also differ from individuals to individuals. Kidney shrinkage with high blood pressure is easy to cause loss of placental function due to lack of blood supply. As a result, intrauterine growth retardation(IUGR), stillbirth, high perinatal mortality, etc. For those women who have severe kidney shrinkage, they have 50% possibility of fetal death.
Several situations whether you are safe to plan pregnancy
● Women who have chronic kidney shrinkage as well as high blood pressure, are not recommended to have a baby. About 75% of them will experience gestational hypertension, leading to a high rate of premature birth and fetal death. They may also have headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting or even muscle cramps.
At this condition, immediate treatment is needed and they have to terminate the pregnancy so as to reduce the burden on kidneys and heart.
● Women who have large amounts of protein (++ or +++), elevated BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and serum creatinine are not OK for being pregnant. In some cases, they have to do induced abortion.
However, if proteinuria is controlled for at least 3 years, you can plan a baby.
At this stage, you should take immediate treatment to restore your kidney function. As long as your kidney function is improved, you can reduce the risks of pregnancy.
You should firstly keep a restricted diet with low sodium and low protein. But high-quality protein and vitamins should be supplied. Meanwhile, taking some exercise to boost immunity is also good.
