Kidney Function Test

BUN and Serum Creatinine: Increase BUN and Serum Creatinine Levels usually indicates a decreased kidney function. The two are the most common tests for kidney function. The normal range of serum creatinine is about 0.7-1.2 mg/dL; 62-106 mM/L.

Creatinine clearance- This test requires 24-hour urine collection. A blood sample is drawn at some point during the 24-hour period, and creatinine clearance, which is an estimate of GFR, can then be calculated. In addition, a formula which involves patient's age, gender, weight and serum creatinine levels also can figure out creatinine clearance without 24-hour urine collection.

GFR (glomerular filtration rate)- GFR measure how well the kidneys' glomeruli works. Normally, kidney filters serve to filter blood and remove the waste products from it. If the kidneys are injured by chronic kidney disease (CKD), the GFR gradually declines, and the amount of remaining kidney function can be estimated by measuring or calculating the GFR. The normal GFR range is 100~150ml/min.

eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate). eGFR requires a MDRD equation which develops as part of a study called modification of diet in renal disease(MDRD) study. This study can estimate GFR with surprising accuracy, based on a person's age, gender, ethnicity, and blood serum creatinine level.
