Mouth sores can appear in the mouth, often on the inside of the cheeks. They are usually be painful when eating, drinking or brushing teeth. It is not are among people. However, if you have kidney disease, you should pay more attention to this problem, especially when they last longer than 3 weeks or keep coming back.
● Will Kidney Failure cause mouth sores?
Yes, Kidney Failure can indeed cause this problem.
Kidney Failure or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) means the kidneys have been severely damaged with GFR (glomerular filtration rate) reducing to less than 15ml/min. As a result, many wastes and toxins cannot be filtered and build up in the body.
Urea, as a by-product of protein metabolism, is also one kinds of wastes that is discharged by kidneys with urine. Therefore, people with Kidney Failure always experience high level of urea. Excessive urea is decomposed by urea enzymes, producing large amounts of ammonia. Ammonia will irritate the mouth mucosa, thus leading to mouth sores.
Mouth sores can also be associated with other factors such as anemia, folate or vitamin B-12 deficiency, food allergies, gingivostomatitis, lupus, allergy to medications or stress.
● How can mouth sores be treated?
If the mouth sores lessens in a few days, they can heal without treatment in about a week or two.
If sores are large, painful, or persistent, your dentist may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a corticosteroid ointment, or a prescription or over-the-counter solution to reduce the pain and irritation.
However, if it is indeed caused by Kidney Failure, it should be treated by improving your kidney function.
For Kidney Failure people with GFR less than 15ml/min, they are recommended to take dialysis to filter the excessive wastes and toxins. However, I do not think it is the best way. Dialysis has its limits because it always cause side effects and cannot improve kidney function. Without dialysis, some problems may recur. Whereas, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCN) can make up the deficiency of dialysis because it is natural and are good for better kidney function. As long as your kidneys can work normally to filter wastes and toxins, you can get rid of many symptoms, including mouth sores.
