Can kidney failure cause vertigo? Absolutely. To know how it happens will give you an understanding about how to relieve this symptom effectively.
Kidney failure, also called End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a very serious condition, because more than 85% of the kidney function has lost. On this condition, kidney disease not only damage your kidney but also other systems and organs. Therefore, it is not strange that you have various problems such as sleep disorder, digestive problems, skin issues and so on.
Causes of vertigo in kidney failure
It is one of the common complications in kidney failure patients. Anemia is due to the decline of red blood cells in the body. Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone produced by the kidneys, is very necessary for the generation of red blood cells. When the kidney is damaged, it fails to secrete enough erythropoietin, thus leading to anemia. When that condition occurs, your brain lack of oxygen, so you have the feeling of vertigo.
2. Electrolyte disorder
Electrolyte disorder is also common problem in kidney failure, because one of the renal functions is to maintain electrolyte balance. Potassium level is easy to be disturbed by damaged kidney disease. When its level in the blood is higher than the normal range 3.5-5.0 milliEquivalents per liter (mEq/L), it can cause obnubilation and dysphoria. However, if patients have the shortage of potassium in their blood, they can have depression, sleepiness and the decrease of memory and directive force, etc.
3. Deposition of wastes and toxins
Due to the deceased GFR (glomerular filtration rate), many wastes and toxins cannot be discharged by the kidneys and accumulate in the body. These useless and harmful substances will be carried to many parts of the body through blood circulation. Nerve system is easy to be affected by the deposition, so you will have many symptoms like dizziness, headache, problem in concentration, loss of appetite, etc. And this may also be a reason of patient’s vertigo.
Vertigo must not be the only symptom of Kidney Failure as it is such a serious condition that attack many other systems and organs. Immediate and effective treatment should be taken.
