People with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) need to watch their potassium, phosphorus, sodium, fat and protein intake. When they are on dialysis, they have to make some dietary changes based on the specific condition. Can Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis eat cake? Yes, but you should eat with limited amount and choose the right type of cakes.
How can CKD patients on dialysis eat cakes properly?
- Eat in moderation
Cakes contain much saturated fat. Patients on dialysis have very little or no kidney function. Saturated fat leads to a higher risk for heart disease and is one of the leading causes of death with many times. Any measure to reduce the risk is beneficial. Therefore, you should take it in moderation. You can consult your doctor or dietitian. Or you can send your test report to firstname.lastname@example.org, and our doctors can give you some free suggestions. Many baked products such as pastries, doughnuts, cookies, crackers, and cakes contain saturated fats.
- Choose cakes right for you
Select low potassium desserts such as cake and/or fruit pies, instead of pecan pie, pumpkin pie, fruitcake or chocolate desserts.
Other tips for dialysis patients
1. Limit salty foods. Salty foods make you thirsty. If you eat too much salt, you may drink too much fluid and possibly make your next dialysis treatment difficult.
2. Use nondairy topping or whipped cream instead of ice cream on desserts.
3. Leach potatoes (to lower the potassium content)
