►Hematuria

About 80% of the children have hematuria as the first symptom, which is almost related to the upper respiratory infection. Hematuria occurs after 24-72 hours after they get infected. What’s more, they often can see their urine present red or coffee-like color. This kind of hematuria is called “gross hematuria”, which means that it can be seen with eyes. The other type of hematuria is called “microscopic hematuria” that only can be seen by microscope. Some of the children with IgA Nephropathy may also have microscope hematuria, but it is not so common.

The urine appears red because there are red blood cells in it. For healthy children, there is no the red blood cells in the urine.Once they get IgA Nephropathy, their kidneys are damaged, resulting in declined GFR (glomerular filtration rate). Then, the red blood cells will leak out of the body by kidneys. That is why hematuria occurs in children with IgA Nephropathy.

►Proteinuria

Proteinuria means that there is abnormal amount of protein in the urine. Generally, you will see the urine is foamy or cloudy. The reason why proteinuria is the same as hematuria. Proteins leak out and foamy urine appears. In most cases, they have mild proteinuria (0.5g/L) or moderate proteinuria (1-3.5g/L). Sometime, it will be accompanied by hematuria.
