What are the Symptoms of IgA NephropathyIgA Nephropathy is a kind of glomerulonephritis, which is associated with glomerular IgA deposits. The most common symptom of IgA Nephropathy is hematuria with or without proteinuria.

IgA Nephropathy hematuria falls into two cases: gross hematuria and microhematuria. The former case, accounting for 40-50% of the total, often starts with upper respiratory tract infection. The latter, accounting for 20-30% of the cases, often occurs to the aged people.

Early stage patients often have no symptoms, so patients may be unaware of their illness for decades.

Patients with gross hematuria should drink more water to avoid tiny blood clots, which is like kidney stones and may cause pain. Very few patients present with hematuria of pure blood. These patients should not take medicines act as anticoagulant, such as fish oil, because they can worsen their bleeding.

With glomerular IgA depositing, the glomeruli suffer further damage. When glomeruli can’t work normally, more symptoms occur, as follows:

Blood and protein in the urine

With IgA building up in the kidneys, IgA deposits cause inflammation (glomerulonephritis) and gradually affect their filtering ability. Therefore, some blood cells and protein leak in the urine.

Swelling of the hands and feet

There are two reasons for the symptom. Firstly, due to excessive leakage of protein in urine, capillary hydrostatic pressure increasing, the fluid in capillary moves massively to tissue space, thus resulting in edema; secondly, the GRF of glomeruli decline while kidney tubules work normally. Thus, kidney tubules absorb excess water and sodium, which leads to occurrence of edema.

High blood pressure

Patients in early stage don’t have the symptom of high blood pressure. As the disease develops, kidney fails to release enzymes that tell blood vessels to relax or constrict through excreting excess salt. Consequently, patients have the symptom of high blood pressure.

Owing to patients’ different conditions, symptoms of patients are diverse from each other. However, some other common symptoms include high cholesterol, fatigue, muscle pain, fever, etc. If you have the above symptoms, you could contact us.
