Many IgA Nephropathy patients often ask doctors such questions as: How long dose it take for IgA Nephropathy to progress into Kidney Failure? How long will it take to cure? Will IgA Nephropathy influence my future life and work?
Today, I will explain to you as for the first question. Actually, there is no exact answer to it. Situation varies from person to person. Researches show that once IgA Nephropathy onsets, 20%~40% of IgA Nephropathy patients will have kidney failure after 10~20 years. The time it takes is closely related to the prognosis of IgA Nephropathy. Then what factors influence the prognosis? Factors related to bad prognosis of IgA Nephropathy are as the following:
1. Male, disease onset at an older age
2. Persistent microscopic haematuria, together with proteinuria
3. Renal insufficiency (persistent moderate or severe proteinuria often means a great possibility of renal insufficiency )
4. Hardly controlled severe hypotension
Therefore, in order to avoid IgA Nephropathy progressing into Kidney Failure (or at least reducing the chances of its happening), you should accept a timely treatment so as to improve prognosis in the early stage of IgA Nephropathy. Then, are there some Nephropathy patients who have ever been cured?
Here is an example:
A businessman (29 years old, single) was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy five years ago. After being treated for 1 year, his illness condition improved obviously, nearing full fitness. His urine occult blood changes from 3+ to 1+ . Besides, his life, work, sleep and diet return back to normal. However, due to busy and overtime work, he was checked out that he has got Kidney Failure (Scr: 340μmol/L, urine occult blood: 4+, urine protein: 2+). As a result, he has to receive a treatment again.
This example tells us that there are indeed some IgA Nephropathy patients who can be remitted completely. And most patients’ illness condition can improve or be delayed progressing into Kidney Failure. The precondition is that you receive a timely and reasonable treatment. In the meantime, you should watch out your life and diet habit, making sure to take low-salt and low potassium food. Keeping enough food with high-quality protein, vitamin and calories is also necessary.
