Do I Have to Follow Water Intake Restriction with High Creatinine Level

Do I Have to Follow Water Intake Restriction with High Creatinine LevelHigh creatinine level is one big concern for most kidney patients, and it is due to extra creatinine accumulating in the blood. Do these patients have to follow any water intake restriction with high creatinine level?

Whether patients need to restrict water intake or not should depend on patients’ medical condition, because creatinine isn’t the only index to determine fluid intake. Generally, patients can get the answer from three aspects.

1. Urine output

Producing urine is the basic kidney function, that is to say, kidneys are responsible for removing extra fluid and waste products. High creatinine level means at least 50% of kidney function has been damaged. If patients’ urine output is still normal, they don’t need to restrict their fluid intake. Otherwise, they should control their fluid intake. This is because the urine output amount mainly depends on fluid excretion amount.

2. Blood pressure

In addition to making urine, keeping blood pressure is another important kidney function. Generally, high blood pressure has a close link with fluid retention. If high blood pressure is accompanied by high creatinine level, patients should control their fluid intake. In the same time, it is necessary to follow a low-sodium diet plan.

3. Swelling or edema

When kidneys are unable to remove extra fluid from the body, patients are more likely to have swelling and edema. In severe cases, patients may even have pulmonary edema. To help alleviate these problems, patients should control their fluid intake.

If patients have one of the above symptoms and complications, they are suggested to restrict water intake. As for how much fluid to drink one day, patients are suggested to tell us more about their illness condition. Then, kidney experts here can give them the answer for the first time.
