At What Creatinine Level Is Dialysis Necessary

At What Creatinine Level Is Dialysis NecessaryMany people know creatinine level is a common standard to judge kidney condition, and patients who have severe kidney damage may have high creatinine level. On the other hand, if patients have severe kidney disease like kidney failure, they may be told there is nothing can be done except for dialysis. So patients may have this curiosity: at what creatinine level is dialysis necessary?

So why patients have high creatinine level?

Creatinine is a harmful substance to body health. Almost all the creatinine produced will be excreted out by kidney at the same day, and creatinine level in blood changes in a stable range. In fact, the method to judge kidney condition by creatinine level is not exact to patients who is in the early stage of kidney disease. Because kidney has strong compensation, patients’ creatinine level will not rise until more than half kidney function is damaged.

While to patients with severe kidney damage, their kidneys are not able to excrete the creatinine out normally. Thereby, the creatinine produced will accumulate in the blood, and patients will have high creatinine level.

At what creatinine level is dialysis necessary?

The normal creatinine level of man is 54~106umol/L, and the normal level of woman is 44~97umol/L.

The creatinine level of kidney failure patients is often much higher than the normal level. Generally speaking, if patients’ creatinine level reaches 500umol/L, patients should consider accepting dialysis. But this is not fixed, because when dialysis is needed is decided by patients’ condition. Most people can not endure when their creatinine level reaches 500, but there are some patients do not need dialysis until their creatinine level reaches 1000.

Dialysis is effective to reduce creatinine, but the creatinine will rise rapidly once patients stop having dialysis. Besides, dialysis can also damage kidneys. The renal function will decline if it is not used for long time, and patients will have to accept kidney transplant in the end.
