2014-09-20 02:01

What Does BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) 36 MeanUrea nitrogen level in the blood is an indicator of how well your kidneys are working. It is the final product of protein metabolism, forming in the live and discharged by the kidneys. BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) 36 is higher than the normal range, namely, 7-20 mg/dL (2.5 to 7.1 mmol/L) in adults. What does it mean?

What are the causes of BUN 36?

A BUN test is done to estimate how well your kidneys are functioning. If your kidneys are not able to remove urea from the blood normally, your BUN level increases. Heart failure, dehydration, or a diet high in protein can also increase your BUN level. Liver disease or damage can decrease your BUN level, because urea is made in the liver. A decreased BUN level can occur normally in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

How serious is BUN 36?

You have known that the normal range of BUN, so BUN 36 is not incredibly serious. Actually, Blood Urea Nitrogen is an indirect measure of kidney function. The other (and better measure) is serum creatinine. Usually, BUN-to-creatinine ratio is more accurate for checking your kidney function.

However, BUN 36 should also draw your concern because it means your kidney function has been damaged. Treatment should be taken to prevent its aggravation.

How to lower BUN 36?

1. Drink plenty of fluids daily to stay hydrated. 2000-3000ml of water one daily can help discharge more waste productions including urea nitrogen from the body.

2. Keep a low-protein diet. High-protein foods include red meat, poultry, fish and dairy. Beans, nuts and grains have moderate amounts of protein, and fruits generally have no protein. The average daily protein intake for healthy adults ranges from 40 to 60 g, and you have to reduce your intake by half.

3. Cope with stress and manage your blood pressure.

4. Reduce or stop some medicines corticosteroids that can increase BUN.

5. Chinese herbal tea. Dandelion, nettle, corn silk, plantain herbs are all diuretic and can help the kidney discharge more BUN.
