When to Be Concerned About BUN Level
When should the person be concerned about his or her BUN level? Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is one blood test item that measures the amount of nitrogen which comes from urea, one terminal protein metabolic waste product. Just like serum creatinine level, BUN level is also taken to see how well kidneys are functioning. High BUN level can indicate kidney damage.
What is the normal blood urea nitrogen level?
If healthy people don’t increase their protein intake quickly, their BUN level will range from 9mg/dl to 20 mg/dl. However, normal BUN level doesn’t always reveal healthy kidneys, because kidneys can still filter blood normally even though they are not functioning at 100%.
When to concerned about blood urea level?
Regardless of unhealthy lifestyle, dehydration, excessive amount of protein intake, and so on, BUN level can indicate at least 50% of kidney function has been lost as long as it is higher than normal value. Furthermore, BUN level higher than 60mg/dl is one indicator of uremia, which is the most severe stage of chronic kidney disease. In this stage, patients must suffer from many symptoms and complications such as acidosis, cardiovascular disease, irregular heartbeat, electrolyte imbalance, difficult breathing, etc. Some of them can even cause death easily.
What to do when BUN level is dangerous?
The best and only option is to take active treatments to lower it, when patients’ BUN level increases abnormally. In mild or moderate stage, patients can take some oral western medicine, oral Chinese medicine, Medicated Bath, Enema Therapy, Cycle Therapy, and some other therapies to manage it. In the end stage of kidney disease, patients should take some kidney replacement therapy or kidney repairing therapies such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Clear Blood Pollution Therapy and Dialysis to lower high BUN level and improve kidney condition.
