ESRD standing for End Stage Renal Disease (or Kidney Failure) is the most serious condition for patients. At this stage, patients’ kidneys have lost more than 85% of the function, failing to work normally. Pulmonary Edema is one of the common symptoms in ESRD. Can it cause low grade fever in ESRD? Let’s take a look at.
What is pulmonary edema?
Edema or swelling is a condition that your body retains much fluid than it actually needs. This is a common situation in End Stage Renal Disease. Our kidneys are responsible for maintaining the water balance by producing urine to discharge excessive fluid. When they are severely damaged, they cannot function well, leading to much fluid building up in many parts of the body. When the lungs are surrounded with fluid, it is called pulmonary edema.
Can pulmonary edema cause low grade fever?
Low grade fever is mild elevation of the temperature above normal.Generally, a child is considered to have a fever if the temperature is at or above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit rectally, 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit orally, or 99 degrees Fahrenheit in the armpit. In an adult, a fever is generally defined as 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) or greater.
Fever is always associated with lungs infection. ESRD patients who have a long term of pulmonary edema are susceptible to infection. That’s why pulmonary edema is accompanied with low grade fever.
Persistent low grade fever is very dangerous, especially in ESRD patients. Therefore, timely and proper treatment is fairly important.
How to manage low grade fever due to pulmonary edema in ESRD?
Medicines like aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and aspirin, can all lower a fever, although aspirin should not be used for children, and ibuprofen is not recommended for infants under six months of age.
However, in some cases, medicines just do nothing but bringing some side effects to the patients. There are many medicines having been reported to harmful for the kidneys. Therefore, here I recommend you to take Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which can improving kidney function naturally and effectively.
