High Uric Acid Levels in ESRDESRD(end stage renal disease) is also known as chronic renal failure (CRF) or Stage 5 Kidney Disease. It happens when the kidneys stop working and you have to live with dialysis or a transplant. Emerging data show that high serum uric acid level is a consequence of end-stage renal disease.

What is high uric acid?

High uric acid or serum uric acid is a result of purine metabolic disorder. The formation and output are almost equal. One third of the product forms from diet, and the rest comes from the body’s own metabolism. Part of uric acid is excreted by intestinal tracts and most are by kidneys. High uric acid level can be caused by any one of the above factors. If it occurs in ESRD, the cause is possibly the severely damaged kidney function.

The normal range of uric acid is:

Men: 3.1-7.0 mg/dL

Women: 2.4-6.0 mg/dL

Children: 2.0-5.5 mg/dL

You can check how serious of your high uric acid based on that list above. However, it is better for you to consult your doctors.

Why does ESRD cause high uric acid?

At end stage of renal disease, the glomerular filtration rate has reduced to less than 14ml/min. Large amounts of useless substances cannot be discharged out of the body. Then, uric acid level in the blood becomes high.

What are the symptoms of high uric acid in ESRD?

1.Gout

It is the most common symptom of high uric acid in ESRD. When the uric acid accumulates in the blood, it may begin to build up in the form of crystals that are hard and needle-like. There urate crystals form within joints or the surrounding tissues, and trigger symptoms, like inflammation, swelling, tenderness and redness, mostly in the toe. Ancles, knees, hands and wrists may also be affected. Intense and sharp pain may also occur in the joints.

2. Kidney stone

Kidney stones are hard lumps formed by accumulation of wastes in the blood. When excessive uric acid deposits, kidney stone comes into being. Generally, no symptoms show until kidney stones pass through ureters to the bladder. In that case, you may experience urinary changes, pain, nauseas, vomiting or fever.

Our Treatment effect

Proteinuria is a common symptom of kidney disease

Mouse over the picture, it can be magnified.

It can make your urine foamy. Although it does not make you feel uncomfortable, it can impair your renal function and make your kidney disease worse. Conventional treatment such as steroids and immunosuppressants can hardly make it negative. In our hospital, systemic Chinese medicine treatment can help you turn it negative. Look at this picture, bubbles in urine become less and less with our treatment going on.
