ESRD Basics

End-stage renal disease is a condition in which your kidneys fail to work. As a result, wastes and fluid build up in the body. It is a serious disease and can lead to death. How to prevent kidney disease progressing into ESRD is very crucial.
Cause
End-stage renal disease is a condition in which your kidneys fail to work at a level needed for day-to-day life.
The most common causes of end-stage renal disease are diabetes, high blood pressure and glomerulonephritis. In America, diabetes and high blood pressure is the leading causes of chronic kidney disease. These diseases affect the kidneys.
Chronic kidney disease is another common disease causing end-stage renal disease which may occurs after 10-20 years CKD onset.
The causes mentioned above lead to approximately 75% of all adult cases. Some other diseases are the causes of end-stage renal disease in children.
FSGS (focal segmental glomerulonephritis) accounts for about 1/3 children who is diagnosed with end-stage renal disease.
Hypoplatic kidneys are small kidneys that contain a reduced number of normally developed filtering elements, while dysplastic kidneys contain components that are abnormally developed. These conditions are the common diseases which can cause end-stage renal disease in children.
Factors which affect the prognosis of end-stage renal disease
1. Co-morbidities speed up the progress of kidney failure
High blood pressure is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease. People with high blood pressure have a poor prognosis. Other co-morbidities can lead to renal function decline. If immediately reverse the condition, it is possible to stop the progress of kidney disease.
2. It is closely related to the primary disease.
Different kidney diseases have different prognosis. Glomerulonephritis is 10 months; diabetes is 6 months; PKD is 18 months.
3. Negative emotion affects the length of patients with renal failure.
Chronic renal failure is a progressive disease which is reversible and with poor prognosis. It is reported that when Scr is lower than 442 umol/l (5mg/l), the average time of developing into end-stage renal failure is 11 months. Just as mention above, there are a lot of factors which can affects the progress of kidney function decline. Infection, heart failure, wrong treatment can lead to kidney function decline.
Some experiments demonstrate show that higher Scr indicates a poor prognosis. So, early detection and treatment increase the chances of successful treatment.

Blood tests measure the levels of waste products and electrolytes in your blood that should be removed by your kidneys.
Urine test is done to measure the kidney function. Urinalysis and a urine test for protein are done to see how much protein is in your urine.
