Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease StagesChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the slow loss of kidney function over months or years. Chronic Kidney Disease is divided into five stages according to GFR (glomerular filtration rate). You may have few signs or symptoms until your kidneys have almost stopped working. Now, I will list some primary symptoms of its stages.

Stage 1 CKD--The GFR (glomerular filtration rate) is more than 90%. There are no obvious symptoms in this stage, but it does not mean your kidneys are healthy. Therefore, if your are in this stage, you’d better go to the hospital to receive some routine tests, like urine test, blood test and so on. Besides, you should also pay attention to your lifestyle.

Stage 2 CKD--The GFR is about 60%~89%. It indicates that there is a mildly reduced kidney function. In this stage, it is likely that patients have such symptoms as foamy urine, mild hypertension, slight swelling and so on. This time, diet therapy is very important to control and eliminate symptoms.

Stage 3 CKD--The GFR is about 30%~59%. There is a moderately reduced renal function and the impaired kidneys fail to remove water and metabolic products from the body. As a result, a high accumulation of waste products in the body leads to kidney diseases. Urine changes are the typical symptoms in this stage 3 chronic kidney disease. Urine output may abnormally become more or less. They may have frequent urination during the night. Other symptoms such as anemia, fatigue, high blood pressure, hematuria, swelling, sleep problems will occur, and they can further cause the decreased kidney function.

Stage 4 CKD--the GFR is about 15%~29%. It shows that there is a severely diminished kidney function and kidneys fail to work adequately. In stage 4, a person is likely to develop complications of high blood pressure, anemia, vomiting, bone disease, skin itching and other diseases. Besides, the symptoms mentioned above such as proteinuria, severe swelling, high blood pressure, etc, will become more serious if you don’t take some measures to prevent progress of illness condition.

Stage 5 CKD-- The GFR falls below 15% and it is usually called the “ESRD (end stage renal disease)”. Kidneys have nearly lost their abilities and at this stage, kidneys are no longer able to remove enough wastes and excess fluids from the body. In this case, you would need dialysis or a kidney transplant.
