Stage 4 CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) means the kidneys are severely damaged. As a result, kidneys cannot remove excess fluid and blood wastes adequately. Keeping a restricted diet is very necessary. Well then, how much water should I drink with Stage 4 CKD?
Fluid intake for CKD Stage 4 patients
In the early stages of kidney disease, patients do not need to limit the fluid. But, as the condition gets worse, patients need to limit fluid intake. In average, the fluid intake each day is 1,500 to 2,000 millilitres. However, if patients with CKD Stage 4 have symptoms of fluid-retention, namely, swelling (edema), they should drink less water. To find out the specific amount, a 24-hour urine collection is measured. The measured volume is added to 500 ml fluid allowance. For example, if the 24-hour urine collection is 500 ml, the fluid restriction is 1000 ml per day.

How to control fluid intake for CKD Stage 4 patients?
-Do not eat too much of foods that contain a lot of water, such as soups, Jell-O, Popsicles, ice cream, grapes, melons, lettuce, tomatoes, and celery.
-Use smaller cups or glasses and turn over your cup after you have finished it.
Tips to keep from becoming thirsty include:
-Avoid salty foods;
-Freeze some juice in an ice cube tray and eat it like a Popsicle (you must count these ice cubes in your daily amount of fluids);
-Stay cool on hot days.
One more thing I want to tell you is that only diet control is far from enough to deal with such a illness condition. Medication is very necessary, and I recommend you to take traditional Chinese herbs that are very natural and effective for patients. Welcome your consultation!
