When you have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), your kidneys have been severely damaged. Protein waste, extra fluid and minerals build up in the body and lead to uremia with symptoms such as swelling, nausea, vomiting, bad breath, never and sleep problems, fatigue and urine changes.

You diet goals should help minimize symptoms and help you maintaini adequate nutrition intake to prevent weight loss and malnutrition.

Diet suggestions for Stage 4 CKD

♦ Protein: At this stage, patients are recommended to take 0.6 grams per kg of body weight. Half the protein should come from high-quality sources that provide all the essential amino acids. You can take egg white, lean meat, fish and milk.

♦ Sodium: The sodium recommendation for Stage 4 CKD is 1,000-4,000 mg/day based on fluid balance and blood pressure. Salty foods like processed meat, canned soups, dried vegetables and fast food should be limited.

♦ Fluid: Fluid retention may cause swelling, weight gain, shortness of breath, high blood pressure and decreased urine output. How much fluid you can take should be calculated by your doctor, according to your age, body weight and urine output amount.

♦ Potassium: A potassium restriction is 2,000 to 3,000 mg a day. Foods high potassium like avocado, legumes, honeydew melon, bananas, potatoes, tomato, pumpkin and winter squash, etc should be limited.

♦ Phosphorous: High-phosphorous foods to limit include cheese, ice cream, chocolate, nuts and seeds, etc.

♦ Calories: Due to protein restriction and poor appetite, Stage 4 CKD patients need to take enough calories intake to prevent weight loss. You are suggested to weigh yourself and track you weigh weekly to see if you need more calories.
