Restless Leg for Renal Disease PatientsRestless leg is a common symptom in renal disease patients. Actually, it has a medical name which is called “ Restless Leg Syndrome”. It always occurs in dialysis people with end stage renal disease. This problems must have brought you many discomforts. Let’s see what are the causes and how to relieve it.

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition where you feel an uncomfortable sensation such as itching, tingling, soreness, and pricking in your legs and are compelled to move them. It occurs when you are trying to relax or fall asleep. You may get RLS when you have been sitting or lying down for an extended period of time, such as when you are on dialysis or sitting in a car or plane.

The symptoms of restless leg syndrome are more pronounced at night, particularly at bedtime. This urge to move your legs disrupts your sleep patterns. You may have difficulty falling or staying asleep, which can lead to insomnia. During the day, you may feel fatigued and irritated.

What are the causes of restless leg for renal disease patients?

Iron deficiency and lack of vitamin B are the two main causes of restless leg due to anemia. For patients with kidney disease, their kidneys cannot produce enough EPO (erythropoietin), which stimulates the generation of red blood cells. With low iron levels and fewer red blood cells being produced, anemia can develop in the early stages of kidney disease and get worse as the renal disease progresses. Nearly all patients in end stage renal disease (the point where dialysis becomes necessary) have anemia.

In addition, bone disease caused by renal disease may also be one factor that will lead to restless leg. If you are not sure what the real cause of restless leg, you can consult our experts online.
