How Do Urine Protein and Creatinine Level Reflect Kidney FunctionChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a disease which requires long-term management. Urine protein and creatinine level are common indexes of CKD. How do they reflect kidney function?

1. Urine protein

As to the measurement of protein, you can do two tests. One is routine urine test, the other is 24h urine protein test. In the first test, the result is often showed with + or -. + indicates that urine in protein is positive. The more + you have, the higher protein in urine. - indicates that urine in protein is negative, and it is normal. In the second test, it showed a general condition of protein leakage. When 24UPr <=0.15g/24h, it is normal. When it is higher than 0.15g, it means you have protein leakage, and your kidneys are damaged.

The more urine protein you have, the worse your kidney filtration function. But it can not declare that your condition is worse. For example, interstitial nephritis. This disease does not present urine protein, but it is likely to lead to kidney failure.

2. Serum creatinine level

Creatinine is a waste product of muscle contraction. It is passed out of body via glomeruli. When its level becomes higher, it will cause damage to our body. For healthy people, because of different physical condition, male’s creatinine level is higher than female, and children’ is the lowest. In our hospital, normal creatinine level ranges from 40-130 umol/L.

Like urine protein, creatinine level is also an indicator of kidney function. The higher your serum creatinine level, the worse your kidney filtration function, the severer your kidneys are damaged.

But does normal creatinine level mean normal kidney function? Of course not. Our kidneys have immense compensatory ability. When your kidney disease is still in the early stage or when your kidney function is slightly impaired, there may be no changes in your creatinine level. Therefore, it can only be used as the index of advanced kidney damage.
