An Overview of High Blood Pressure in Chronic Kidney DiseaseHypertension (high blood pressure) caused by kidney disease is medically named “renal hypertension”. It can be either a cause or a consequence of CKD (chronic kidney disease). An overview of hypertension will be very helpful for you to deal with it.

1. Cause for hypertension

About 90% renal hypertension is caused by fluid retention. Diseased kidneys cannot discharge excessive fluid and waste, leaving water and sodium deposited in kidneys. As a result, the blood volume becomes abnormally large, and then hypertension occurs.

2. Target of blood pressure control

There is no doubt that hypertension is dangerous for kidneys. Therefore, keep blood pressure under control is an urgent need. Then, what is the target of that? In general, a blood pressure goal of <120 mmHg systolic and <80 mmHg diastolic is recommended for CKD patients. However, 130/80 is considered high for CKD patients during dialysis.

3. Treatment for hypertension

(1) Medications

-ACEI(angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor)

--Angiotensin receptor blockers: Combination of ACEI and ARB is helpful in reducing proteinuria and may also lower blood pressure further in some cases.

-CCB (calcium channel blockers)

-Diuretic : It is taken after initial dosing with an ACEI, ARB or other drugs

-Beta-blockers

(2) Scientific lifestyle

Sodium restriction of no more than 2 grams daily is required. In addition, one drink of alcohol with 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor is OK. Regular exercise, weight loss and reducing saturated fat help to reduce blood pressure.

(3) Routine measurement

Blood pressure should be monitored closely in hypertensive patients with CKD and both clinic and home blood pressure measurements may help the clinician adjust treatment.

Lastly, I want to remind you that there are five stages of CKD, treatments of hypertension will be provided based on the specific illness condition. What’s more, the above treatments just relieve the symptom without solving the underlying problem. I think you may as well try Chinese medicine therapy. Blood Pollution Therapy, Acupuncture, Medicated Bath, Hot Compress Therapy, Foot Bath Therapy, Medicated Therapy, and Enema Therapy are mature clinical applications.
