What diet changes can help your kidneys?
● Limit use of salt and salty foods
● Adjust protein intake
● Reduce foods high in potassium and phosphorous if necessary
● Be aware of you waster intake
Nutrition facts for Stage 3 CKD patients
Sodium (no more than 6g per day)
● Choose to flavor foods with non-salty spices such as onion, ginger, parsley, and garlic.
● Eat less canned foods, deli meats, convenience foods and salty snacks.
● Eat less ready made sauces, coatings and condiments like ketchup and soy cause.
Choose these foods more often:
● Fresh or frozen vegetables
● Whole grain breads and cereals
● Fresh or frozen meats and fish
● Plain rice and pasta
Protein (0.6-0.8 gram per kg of body weight)
● Choose high-quality protein foods like egg white, lean meat and milk.
● Limit plant protein such as beans and bean products.
● Choose fresh or frozen unprocessed meats, poultry, pork and fish most often.
Potassium
Consult your doctor whether you have abnormal potassium level. If so, you should avoid or limit:
● Avocadoes, bananas, cantaloupe or honeydew melons, organs
● Potatoes, sweet potato or yams, winter squash, tomato paste and sauces.
● Nuts and sunflower seeds.
Phosphorous
High-phosphorous foods include:
● Hot chocolate, beer, cola based soft drinks, and bottled iced tea
● Instant pancake and biscuit mixes
● Processed cheese slices and cheese spreads
