In general, kidney patients should follow a principle of 5 Low and 1 High, namely low salt, low fat, low potassium, low phosphorus, low high quality protein and high vitamin diet.

1. Low salt and low fat

It is advisable for renal patients to eat salt 3g/per day, no more than 6g, especially when you have swelling and high blood pressure, because too much salt intake can add insult to injury.

From the above table, we can see that vegetables and fruits contain less phosphorus than meat. It is not suggested to eat those foods which contain phosphorus higher than 100mg. And you had better control phosphorus intake within 900mg per day, in case that it causes electrolyte disturbance.

3. Low potassium

-Low potassium foods: it refers that 100g food contains less than 150mg potassium. The commonly eaten foods include onion, pumpkin, zucchini, wax gourd, eggplant, watermelon, grapes, apple, crab apple, pear, pineapple, etc.

-Foods that contain moderate potassium: it refers that 100g food contains 150-250mg potassium. The commonly eaten foods include fresh potatoes, taro, carrot, white radish, cabbage, celery, blanched garlic leaves, garlic bolt, shallot, cucumber, luffa, bitter gourd, tomato, bell peppers, muskmelon, oranges, etc.

-Foods high in potassium: it refers that 100g food contains over 250mg potassium. The commonly eaten foods include fresh pea, hyacinth bean, Chinese yam, lotus root, chufa, pakchoi, oilseed rape, spinach, edible amaranth, asparagus lettuce, garlic sprouts, green Chinese onion, cauliflower, mushroom, tremella, agaric, kelp, nori, nectarine, apricot, red date, haw, bananas, etc.

If your blood potassium level is high, you can eat foods contain low or moderate potassium. And the potassium consumption should be controlled into 2g per day.

4. Low high quality protein

Protein intake should be controlled into 20-40g. Milk, egg white, lean meat, fish and so on are all high quality protein. A bag of milk contains about 8g protein, and 2 eggs contain 7g protein.

5. High vitamin

CKD patients usually have anemia. Vitamin C supplement can help absorb iron so as to improve anemia. Tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, fresh date, watermelon, cucumber, oranges, kiwi fruits and so on are all good sources of vitamin C.
