How Much Protein Should a Person with Renal Disease EatHow much protein should a person with renal disease or kidney disease eat? There is no exact answer to this question, because cases vary from person to person. Amount of protein intake should be adjusted at different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease.

Two opposite statements

Some kidney disease patients eat much fish and meat that is rich in protein. They think that since protein leaks out with urine, the body will lack nutrition and calories, so they need supplement of protein. While others hold opinion that much protein intake results in more protein leakage which will damage kidneys. So they keep a strict limit on eating protein.

Well then, which statement is true?

Proper protein intake for kidney disease patients

Patients who have protein leakage in urine may experience hypoproteinemia, leading to malnutrition. Therefore, take enough protein is very necessary to prevent anemia or Nutritional Edema. In this case, recommended protein intake for adults is 1.5-2 grams per kg of body weight. Good food choices are egg white, lean meat, poultry and fish that are in high-quality of protein.

For those with mild or moderate kidney function damage, recommended protein intake is 0.7-1 gram per kg of body weight. And as for patients with severe kidney damage and those who have high BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and serum creatinine level, they are suggested to take protein 0.5-0.7 g per kg of body weight.

What should you know?

Diet is just one small aspect of treating kidney disease. A healthy diet help patients reduce burden on kidneys but cannot repair damaged renal tissues. No certain food can help patients stop the progression of kidney disease. Medication is the key and I recommend Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). If you are interested, be free to contact with us!
