Is Fasting Dangerous If You Have Kidney ProblemsFasting of Ramadan is the religion of Muslim. About its advantages, different people have different opinions. Is fasting dangerous if you have kidney problems?

What is fasting?

Fasting is sometimes prescribed by some health gurus. Some people believe that giving the digestive system a rest and abstaining from eating for a long period of time, is beneficial for health as it allows the living cells to cannibalize the dead and weak cells and eliminate them.

However, in Muslim fasting one is not supposed to drink anything. We lose water in the form of vapor through exhaling, sweating, in urine, and in stool. Along with the water, small amounts of salts are also lost. If this lost water is not regularly replaced it leads to dehydration. Severe dehydration is very dangerous because it reduce blood volume to kidneys, and may cause death.

To sum up, I do not recommend kidney disease patients to have fasting.

How to keep a friendly diet?

Here is a introduction for general population. As for you own condition, you can email to us at kidney-symptoms@hotmail.com or leave a message below.

-Reduce sodium intake. This is to prevent fluid-retention that can cause swelling and high blood pressure.

-Watch out protein intake. In general, the recommended protein amount is 0.6-0.8 g per kg of body weight. Foods containing high-quality protein are good choices.

-Lower potassium and phosphorous intake. Abnormal mineral levels in the blood can cause some problems such as muscle cramps, abnormal hear rate and shortness of breath, etc.

Mouse over the picture, it can be magnified.

It can make your urine foamy. Although it does not make you feel uncomfortable, it can impair your renal function and make your kidney disease worse. Conventional treatment such as steroids and immunosuppressants can hardly make it negative. In our hospital, systemic Chinese medicine treatment can help you turn it negative. Look at this picture, bubbles in urine become less and less with our treatment going on.
