Can Kidney Failure Cause Back Pain

Can Kidney Failure Cause Back PainIndividuals with Chronic Kidney Failure may remain asymptomatic, even when the functional capacity of kidneys decreases to as low as 20% of the normal capacity. One symptom that occurs in some cases of Kidney Failure is back pain. How does it occur?

Back pain can be a symptom of several different kidney diseases that may result in Kidney Failure. These conditions include:

PKD. It is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. PKD cysts can slowly replace much of the mass of the kidneys, reducing renal function and resulting in renal failure. One of the most common symptom is pain in the back and the sides (between the ribs and hips).

Kidney cyst. A renal cyst refers to a pocket filled with fluid and located in the kidneys. In some patients, kidney cyst can cause back or flank pain, especially if it becomes enlarged in size.

Kidney infection. A kidney infection usually happens when bacteria gets into the urethra from the anus and travels up through the bladder into one or both of the kidneys. Symptoms of an infection include lower back pain (either one or both sises which may radiate into the groin), felling sick, cloudy urine, blood in urine, etc.

Kidney stones. People may feel a severe cramping pain that spreads from the lower back into the groin if there is a kidney stone in the ureter.

Therefore, if you are suffering from back pain and Kidney Failure, it's best to speak to your doctor right away and find out the actual cause. If caught early, back pain can be alleviated soon and Dialysis or a transplant can be avoided. Good luck!
