IgA Nephropathy: What is the Lifespan of Kidney Transplant

Q: My wife is 41 years old and she is suffering from IgA nephropathy and now her creatinine level is as high as 7.2mg/dl. And She is under allopathic treatment. What is the safe limit of creatinine for kidney transplant. What is expected life of kidney transplant?

A: How are you? You sent us an email to our website asking about kidney transplant for your wife's IgA Nephropathy.

High Creatinine Level 7.2

You said her serum creatinine was 7.2mg/dl. It is already very high. If she has serious symptoms like nausea, vomiting, edema or hard breathing, she has to start dialysis as soon as possible.

Creatinine is the waste products of muscular activity which should be filter out by kidneys in normal conditions. However, in people with IgA Nephropathy, the kidneys fail to remove them, causing high creatinine levels.

Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplant, in clinic, is reported as the last choice, not the best choice. As for your wife’s condition, I don't suggest kidney transplant, because IgA Nephropathy is a kind of autoimmune disease. The deposition of IgA antibodies in the kidneys caused inflammation in the kidneys and damaged the kidney function. If she transplanted a new kidney, there is still 30% to 60% chance of getting this disease again.

Lifespan of Kidney Transplant

The lifespan of the transplanted kidney is limited. She is still young. We should try our best to improve the function of her own kidneys and regulate her immune system so as to retard kidney transplant. If well controlled, she can stop dialysis and avoid kidney transplant.

I hope you can send me her latest test reports including urine test, blood test, renal function, ultrasound and the biopsy report. I will analyze it and give you specific advice. CONTACT EMAIL: kidneyservice@hotmail.com
