How does tea colored urine occur in IgA Nephropathy?

About over 50% of IgA Nephropathy patient have blood in urine, which can be seen either by the eyes or microscope. Hematuria usually occurs after the upper respiratory infection (URI) onsets one to three days later. At the beginning, hematuria can be seen by eyes, and this kind of urine state is called gross hematuria. It will last several hours or days and then turns into microscopic hematuria.

The color of the hematuria is tea or coffee-like, and sometimes even darker. In fact, it is the red blood cells that make the urine with those colors. As the glomeruli are damaged, many macromolecular substances like red blood cells will leak out of the body. IgA Nephropathy occurs when excessive Immunoglobulin A deposits inside kidneys, resulting in reduced in injured glomeruli. Thereby, red blood cells are discharged in urine and then you will see red, tea-colored or dark-orange urine.

How often does tea-colored urine with IgA Nephropathy occur?

Normally, acute gross hematuria will not last more than one week with quick onset and disappearance. So people are easily diagnosed with urinary infection. About 40% of IgA Nephropathy patients have gross hematuria and experience 1 to 20 times onsets.

The rest patients will have microscopic hematuria after get infection of respiratory tract, digestive system, or urinary tract. Some people have this situation after a long term hard work or vaccination. The internal time between infection and blood urine is1-2 days.
